Desserts don't have to be hard to be delicious! This one is super easy because you can toss everything into a blender or food processor and it's done.
I used organic cacao powder for a few reasons. Cacao can be used as a substitute for ordinary chocolate powder in nearly any dish. It is the smart way to get your chocolate fix! It's also rich in polyphenols which have a lot of health benefits and who couldn't use an extra does of healthy, right?
Cacao has more antioxidants but it isn't as sweet as cocoa. It's also packed with iron and magnesium.
Once we made the change, we haven't looked back. My chocolate of choice is now 90% dark chocolate which also has a lot of health benefits. I used to love milk chocolate until I read about how dark chocolate has so many benefits. Now we buy Lindt Excellence 90% Dark Chocolate for a snack.
This recipe gives us 4 good sized servings. We usually eat 2 immediately and then put the rest in the fridge until the next day. It tastes better cold but who can wait? Not me!
If you have a family member who doesn't like avocados, this is a great way to sneak some into their diet. You can't taste the avocado and they'll think they are eating chocolate mousse! This recipe is loaded with potassium since it contains both bananas and avocados. Doesn't it feel great when you find an easy snack that's healthy?
Why add cinnamon bark essential oil?
It gives this mousse a kick! I know, chocolate is delicious by itself. BUT, when you add the cinnamon essential oil it's like a burst of flavor in every bite! The first time we made it I only added 1 drop. When cooking with essential oils you don't need a lot. A little goes a long way.
However, after we've made this several times we now add 2-3 drops per batch.
Banana Avocado Mousse Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 large ripe avocado
- 1 large ripe banana
- 1/4 c. raw honey
- 1/4 c. organic cacao powder (I use this brand because the only ingredient is cacao)
- 1/2 can of coconut milk or coconut cream (unsweetened)*
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 drops of cinnamon essential oil (I only use this brand since it's labeled for ingesting)
Directions:
Add coconut milk or cream first to blender or food processor. Add the rest of ingredients and blend until creamy.
Top with unsweetened shredded coconut flakes.
*Notes:
- The riper banana and avocado you use, the sweeter this will be.
- I put a can of unsweetened coconut milk in the refrigerator overnight and scooped off the cream. Once I had the cream scooped off, I used the rest of the can until I had a half can left. I put that in a mason jar and left in the fridge to use for my next batch of Banana Avocado Mousse. When I made the second batch, I just dumped the entire contents of the mason jar in.
- If you are using coconut cream, you do not need to refrigerate overnight. Just use 1/2 the can. If you make a larger batch by doubling the ingredients, use your entire can.
